Have you been diagnosed with HG ? Need Support?
Bump2Baby Doula Services Is here to support you!
What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)?
HG is a severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that goes well beyond typical morning sickness. It can cause dehydration, weight loss, electrolyte imbalance, and interfere with daily life, work, nutrition, and mental health.
Symptoms may include persistent vomiting, inability to keep food or fluids down, rapid weight loss, dizziness and for some pre-existing or new anxiety or depression.
Treatment often includes hydration and electrolyte replacement, anti-nausea medications, nutritional support, and coordination with your medical team (obstetrician, midwife, maternal-fetal medicine, dietitian).
How a Doula Can Help When You Have HG
A doula’s role is nonmedical but deeply supportive—practical, emotional, and informational. For someone experiencing HG, a doula can be a consistent, compassionate partner through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Emotional and Mental-Health Support
Validation and advocacy: Acknowledge the very real physical and emotional toll of HG and help you advocate for appropriate medical care and symptom relief.
Ongoing emotional presence: Frequent check-ins (phone, text, video) to listen, normalize your feelings, and reduce isolation, which is common with HG.
Stress and anxiety reduction: Gentle coaching in breathing, grounding, visualization, and other coping skills tailored to what feels doable when you're unwell.
Postpartum mental-health monitoring: After delivery, doulas watch for postpartum mood disorders and encourage early treatment/referral if needed—especially important for those who endured prolonged HG.
Practical, Day-to-Day Support
Symptom-friendly care: Help create a caregiving plan that minimizes nausea triggers—low-light, fresh air, scent-free spaces, and small, bland, frequent food/fluids that your body tolerates.
Meal and nutrition support: Coordinate or prepare safe, tolerated meals/snacks when preferences or tolerances change; work with your dietitian or medical team to optimize nutrition and caloric intake.
Hydration strategies: Assist with suggested oral rehydration solutions, ice chips, popsicles, or coordinate IV/clinic visits as needed.
Household assistance: Light household tasks, errands, childcare for older children, and pet care—reducing nonessential physical and mental load so you can rest and recover.
Appointment support and transportation: Accompany you to obstetric or infusion/IV centers, help you communicate symptoms and medication effects, and ensure you leave with clear next steps and notes.
Care Coordination and Advocacy
Medical system navigation: Explain common treatments for HG in plain language and help you prepare questions for visits.
Advocate during visits: Support you in communicating your symptoms and concerns to your provider, and help ensure your preferences and history are clearly heard.
Referrals and resources: Connect you to specialists, local support groups, mental-health resources, lactation consultants, and community services when needed.
Birth Support When You’ve Had HG-How Doula Rhonda at Bump2Baby Doula Services LLC Can help:
Tailored birth planning: Help you create a birth plan that accounts for your HG history—pain management preferences, IV access concerns, medication wishes, and rest/recovery needs.
Prenatal preparation: Provide education about what to expect in labor, how dehydration or electrolyte imbalance can affect labor and interventions, and strategies to conserve energy in early labor.
Labor and delivery presence: Provide continuous emotional and physical support in labor, help with nausea-reduction techniques (acupressure, controlled breathing, position changes, cool compresses), and coordinate with your care team about nausea management during labor and postpartum.
Breastfeeding support planning: Discuss feeding goals and potential challenges after prolonged HG (delayed milk production, exhaustion) and build a plan with lactation support if needed.
Postpartum Support After HG- How Doula Rhonda at Bump2Baby Doula Services LLC can help:
Recovery-focused care: Help you create a realistic postpartum plan that includes rest, nutrition, and gradual activity increases. Assist with newborn care and older children so you can recover.
Feeding assistance: Support breastfeeding or bottle-feeding goals, coordinate early lactation consultations if milk supply or mama’s nutrition is a concern.
Monitor maternal health: Watch for signs of ongoing dehydration, malnutrition, or mood disorders and facilitate referrals to medical providers when necessary.
Practical parenting help: Offer hands-on newborn care, help establish gentle routines, and provide resources for sleep, soothing, and infant feeding while you regain strength.
Special Considerations and Techniques Doulas Use with HG
Small-step coaching: Break tasks into tiny, achievable steps to avoid overwhelming someone whose energy and tolerance are limited.
